2010: Unrein, who entered the NFL with Houston as a college free agent on May 7, was waived by the Texans during final roster cutdowns before signing with Denver on Oct. 20 and spending the final 11 weeks of the season on the club’s practice squad.

COLLEGE: Unrein totaled 162 tackles (67 solo), 20.5 tackles for losses (75 yds.) and 10.5 sacks (75 yds.) with two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 48 career games (38 starts) for the University of Wyoming… Garnered honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference accolades in each of his final three years for the Cowboys… Registered 41 total tackles, including six tackles for a loss (21 yds.) and four sacks (17 yds.), as a senior and was named the Defensive MVP of the New Mexico Bowl in 2009 after collecting six tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

PERSONAL: Unrein earned first-team all-state honors as a junior and senior at Eaton (Colo.) High School, where he was also among the top wrestlers in the state… Mitch Unrein was born on March 25, 1987, in Eaton, Colo.

2009: Mitch Unrein earned Honorable Mention All-Mountain West Conference honors for the second consecutive season in 2008. He will team with senior defensive tackle John Fletcher to form one of the best pass-rush tandems in the Mountain West Conference in 2009. Unrein is a relentless worker, and one of the toughest players on the Cowboy team. He has started the last 24 consecutive games at defensive end for Wyoming. Unrein, Fletcher and fellow senior Fred Givens, at noseguard, have started together each of the past two seasons on the Poke D-Line.

2008: Unrein was a disruptive force for opposing offenses. He totalled 54 tackles, had 1.5 sacks, 2.5 tackles for losses, recovered one fumble and broke up one pass his junior season. He was a big reason why the Cowboys ranked No. 38 in the nation in total defense and No. 31 in pass defense. An extremely consistent performer, Unrein recorded a season high 10 tackles versus Utah, including 1.0 sack. He was credited with eight tackles versus Air Force, and had six at TCU. Unrein had five tackles on two other occasions — at New Mexico and at UNLV. He earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors. Unrein started all 12 games for Wyoming at defensive end for the second consecutive season,

2007: Unrein ranked second for the Cowboys in both sacks (5.0) and tackles for losses (11.0) in 2007. Those totals ranked him No. 8 in the MWC in tackles for losses and No. 10 in sacks. His 55 total tackles were seventh best for the Pokes, and ranked him 49th in the conference. Unrein twice recorded a season best seven tackles in a game during the `07 campaign — versus TCU and at Colorado State. In the TCU game, he also forced a fumble and was named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week in a 24-21 Wyoming win. Versus UNLV, Unrein was credited with 2.0 sacks and four total tackles. He earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors as a sophomore.

2006: He saw a lot of action as a redshirt freshman in 2006, playing in all 12 games and starting one at BYU. He had the luxury of learning from former Cowboy seniors Mike Groover, Corey Mace and Aaron Robbins in 2006. He also had the opportunity to continue to develop physically in his redshirt freshman season. Unrein was credited with 12 total tackles, including one tackle for a loss. He earned his first varsity letter. He walked on to the Wyoming Football team in the fall of 2005, and was awarded a scholarship in the spring of 2006.

2005: Redshirted.

High School: Unrein was a First Team All-State selection by both the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News as a high school junior and senior at Eaton High School in Eaton, Colo. His senior season, he was credited with 125 total tackles and four quarterback sacks in only six and one half games, missing part of his senior season due to injury. He was elected a team captain as a senior. One of the top wrestlers in the state of Colorado, he won a state championship at 215 pounds as a senior, and helped lead his team to a third-place finish as a team in the State Championships. He recorded 31 pins on way to the state championship his senior season. As a junior, Unrein recorded 146 tackles, including six sacks and one pass interception. Unrein achieved Honor Roll throughout his four years in high school. He was coached in high school by Bill Mondt. Unrein was also recruited by Army and Colorado State coming out of high school.

Personal: Born March 25, 1987, he is one of six children of Kay and Mike Unrein. He comes from a very athletic family. He has two brothers, Mark and Michael, who played college football at Northern Colorado, and his sister, Natalie, was a three-time All-American swimmer — also at Northern Colorado. He is studying criminal justice at UW.
